Deacon Henry Clay Sweeney

SWEENEY, Deacon Henry Clay - age 79, passed away, Sunday, June 15, 2014 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Oakland. Family hour 10:30AM Saturday, June 28, 2014 at New Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, 124 Prospect St., with funeral service commencing at 11AM. Pastor William Parker, Jr. ,officiating. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 North Belford Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30AM Saturday. Deacon Sweeney will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 268 N. Perry St., and may be viewed from 2PM-8PM Friday. Deacon Henry Clay Sweeney was born December 25, 1934 in Powell, Texas, the son of the late Opal Fay Thomas and P.G. Sweeney. Deacon Sweeney was the eldest of six children. He graduated from High School in Pelham, Texas. Deacon Sweeney worked as a farmer, General Motors Corporation and as Public Transportation Bus Driver for Incygo, Indiana from 1984-1999. Deacon Sweeney served his country proudly and was honorable discharged. He moved back to Pontiac in 2003 and worked as a Security Guard for various banking institutions. Upon Deacon Sweeney’s return back to Pontiac, he united in membership with the New Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, under the then Pastoral Leadership of the late Rev. Lenworth Miner Jr. He continued to serve faithfully under the current Pastor, Rev. William Parker. Our father was very caring and loving person, who was a loving father, excellent granddad who’s love was unconditional and protective of his three girls, Sonya, Molly and Alyssia). Deacon Sweeney will be greatly missed by his church family, friends and family. Deacon Sweeney leaves to cherish his memory: daughter, Sonya Louise Johnson; three step children, Denise, Genise; granddaughters, Molly Sierra Morgan and Alyssia Amircale Armster aka “AAA”; fourteen step grandchildren; two sisters, Minyon McConney and Alfreda Hawkins; three brothers, Ricky Thomas, Donzell Broadnax and Orson Thomas; three brothers-in-law, Sonny and Bill of Indianapolis, IN and Howard Chambers of Pontiac, MI; and a host of other relatives and friends including special friend, Sherman McLaurin. Deacon Sweeney was preceded in death by his wives, Vergie Chambers-Sweeney and Beliha Rodgers-Sweeney (Married thirty sweet years); parents, Opal Fay Thomas and P.G. Sweeney; grandparents, Andrew and Annie Blair; stepdaughter, Delores Rodgers The family would like to express special thanks to Atlas Home Health Care Nurse, Ms. Tanish (Physical Therapist), and long term care social worker, Evangelist Phyllis Walker.
