Deacon Arteway George Peete

PEETE, Deacon Arteway George "Pete"- age 63, passed away, Monday, May 20, 2013 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Oakland. Family hour 10:00AM Saturday May 25, 2013 at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 174 Branch St., with funeral service commencing at 11AM. Pastor Keyon S. Payton, officiating. Interment Perry Mount Park Cemetery, 878 N. Perry St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00AM Saturday. Deacon Peete will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 268 N. Perry St., and may be viewed from 12Noon-8PM Friday. Deacon Arteway George Peete was born to the late John William Peete Sr. and Zelner Peete on March 30, 1950 in Covington, Tennessee, the fifth of seven children. On September 30, 1972, he married Elizabeth Smith and raised five children. He was employed by General Motors and retired in 2010 with forty years of service on the Union Safety Committee. Arteway was a caring and devoted husband, father, brother and friend who accepted Christ at an early age. His positive attitude would always bring the best out of others; if they were down, he would share his testimony of what GOD had done in his life and then follow-up with a joke or two. Peete was known for his impeccable style of clothing and his famous “Peete Ribs.” Pete was a devoted member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He served on the Deacon Board, Pastoral Care, Director of Male Chorus, President of Barnabus Ministry, Pastoral Anniversary Committee, Mass Choir, Security and served on The City-Wide Choir Union. If it was something that needed to be repaired, built, removed or any other duties in the church, Peete was there, faithfully, with open arms. Left to remember his wonderful spirit, is his loving wife of forty years, Elizabeth Peete; his children, Carneil (Stephanie) Thomas, LaMesha (Dwayne) Brydie, Arteway Chevelle Peete Jr. (Cynthia), Donnell Peete; adopted son, Sherrod Maye; twelve grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Gloria Jean (Robert) Pettiford of Detroit, MI, Cynthia A. West of Pontiac, MI, Margie Watkins of Troy, MI; two brothers, William (Claudine) Peete of Pontiac, MI, Dwight (Lavern) Peete of Southfield, MI; aunt, Pearline Teamer of Detroit, MI; uncle, John E. Hines of St. Louis, MO; five sisters-in-law, Helen Herron, Diana Smith, Annie Nell Smith, Barbara Wilson, Sherry Collins; five brothers-in-law, Robert Baugh, Norman Smith, Kevin Harris, Mark Harris and Reggie Wilson; and a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends. Deacon Peete was preceded in death by his parents, John William and Zelner Peete, Sr.; siblings, Clayton Peete, Walker Peete, John William Peete, Jr., and Evelyn Hall; loving neighbors, William and Betty Terry.
