SMITH, Mrs. Dorothy Jean "Shuga Me" - Age 67, passed away Wednesday December 24, 2014 at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital. Family hour 10:00AM Friday, January 2, 2015 at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 174 Branch Street with funeral service commencing immediately at 11:00AM. Rev. Keyon S. Payton, M Div., Senior Pastor, Officiating. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery, 216 University Drive. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00AM Friday. Mrs. Smith will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 268 N. Perry St., and may be viewed from 8:00AM - 2:00PM Thursday. Dorothy Jean “Shuga Me” Smith was born November 27, 1947 in Montgomery, Alabama the daughter of Joe “Coon” and the late Magnolia Harris. Dorothy found Christ at an early age at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school and also assisted her mother Magnolia in the kitchen. Dorothy was employed with the Department of Human Services for over eight years and retired from the Pontiac School District. Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Holidays and birthdays were a priority to her! During her retirement years she enjoyed shopping at Macy’s and resale shops. She also enjoyed watching movies and researching various subjects. Her favorite past-time was reminiscing about family history. Dorothy also enjoyed playing basketball in her younger days. Mrs. Smith leaves to cherish her memory: children, Reggie (Tammy) Harris of Auburn Hills, MI; Trillum Smith of Pontiac,MI; Ryon (Melissa) Smith of Gilbert, AZ and Tia Smith of Kansas, MO; grandchildren, Jeremy and Jordan Harris, Xavier Smith, Trenity, Smith, Tatianna Smith, Taris Smith, Audrey and Amariah Harris, Dallas Smith, Iziah and Zion Smith and Naomi Pulliam; two great-grandchildren; father, Joe “Coon” Harris; siblings, Linda Harris, Shirley (Rev. Larry) Burton, Joseph Harris, Jr., Delores (James) Page and Juliette (Pastor William) Crawley; nieces, Shawn, Neet, Carla, Linda, Kim, Alia, Jonne, Niki, Marrie, Joe, Jada and Princess; nephews, Tim, Terrence, Joseph, Dante, Marcus, BiJon, Bryon, Little Man, Dameon and Troy; mother-in-law, Elizabeth "Mattie" Garrison; sister-in-laws, Karen Tolliver, Samakka "Alma" Shabazz and Lucretia Garrison; brother-in-laws, Buford and Kevin (Vanessa) Garrison and other relatives and friends.
