Tommie L. "Granny" Hicks

HICKS, Mrs. Tommie L. "Granny" – age 67, passed away, Sunday, January 5, 2020 at her residence. Funeral Service 1:00 PM Saturday, January 11, 2020 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 318 Auburn Ave., Pastor Timothy Lawrence, Officiating. Interment Perry Mount Park Cemetery, 878 N. Perry Street. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 1:00 PM Saturday. Mrs. Hicks will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 268 North Perry Street, and may be viewed from from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM Friday. Tommie Lee Hicks was born December 4, 1952, the youngest daughter of Tom and Alberdia Davis. Tommie accepted Christ at an early age, and was baptized at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church. In 1970 she graduated from Senatobia High School, where she met Otis Hicks, the love of her life. Tommie enjoyed telling the story about how she would sit on the school steps and watch the handsome basketball star walk home from school each day; "I would watch until he was clean out of sight", she would say. In 1972 Tommie and Otis moved to Michigan where they wed on December 7th of that year. For Several years Tommie worked as a dispatcher for Michigan State Police, before taking on a secretarial position with the Pontiac School District, where she had the pleasure of working for several administrators at the high school level. Throughout the years she developed long-lasting relationships with co-workers and students. In 2008, Tommie retired from the Pontiac School district after 30 years of service. Upon retiring, she enjoyed taking road trips with her husband and close cousin Carolyn (Ben) Benbow. She also enjoyed long bike rides with close friends Joyce and Tyrone (Tyia) McAlpine, and hosting family and friend gatherings at her home, especially birthday parties for her grandchildren. Tommie had a welcoming personality that served her well as a member of the Hospitality Ministry where she greeted parishioners as they entered the doors of the church. Her brilliant smile, warm hugs and friendly demeanor helped win countless souls for Christ. Mrs. Hicks leaves to cherish her memory, husband of 47 years, Mr. Otis Hicks, one daughter, Audra (Lorenzo) Bell and one son, Matthew (D'Jhonia) Hicks; four grandchildren, Victoria Bell, Brianna Hicks (Vashon), Ciara Bell and Dallas Hicks; two sisters, Mary Young and Jessie Moore of Senatobia Mississippi; four nieces, Juanita (Joe & Fifi) Peters of Houston, Texas; Darvita (Ray) Swift of Arlington, Tennessee; Monica (Marty) Greason and Malinda Miller of Indiana; Toni Sims and Janie Mae Ervin; a very special great-nephew, Frank (Jean) Herrion; two very close cousins, Margret Austin and Ruthie Lee Austin -Tate, all of Memphis Tennessee; and a host of other family, friends, and good neighbors. Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Alberdia Davis, and brothers, Alvin "Buddy" Herron and James Gates.
