Roddie Broughton

BROUGHTON, Ms. Roddie Ann - Age 49, passed away Friday, July 30, 2010 at Sinai Grace Hospital. Family hour 10:30AM Saturday August 7, 2010 at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 1961 Lafayette, with funeral service commencing immediately at 11AM. Pastor Johnnie K. Bennett, officiating. Rev. Rodney Armstrong, eulogist. Family and friends will assemble at the church 10:30AM Saturday. Ms. Broughton will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 268 N. Perry St., and may be viewed from 1-8PM Friday. Roddie Ann Broughton was born March 16, 1961 in Flint, Michigan the daughter of Bernice Abston and Gilbert Hairston. Roddie attended and graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1979, and went on to further her education at Michigan State University, majoring in elementary education.She served as a daycare director for St. John Presbyterian Church. In 1984, she married Keith Broughton, and to this union one child was born, Sharleita. She was a dedicated and compassionate teacher for over twenty-five years. Roddie was also a faithful employee for twenty years with the Detroit Board of Education, serving as an elementary school teacher. She had an infectious and kind personality. She was a genuine, giving and loving mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. Roddie is now resting in peace and will forever be missed. Roddie Ann Broughton leaves to cherish her memory: one daughter, Sharleita Broughton of Novi, MI; one grandchild, Kameren Duane "PooPoo" Broughton of Novi, MI; parents, Bernice Abston of Grand Blanc and Gilbert (Willa) Hairston of Flint, MI; two sisters, Denise Odum of Arkansas and Wendy (Jesse) Lawson of Clarkston, MI; two step-brothers, Gary Cooper and Andre Abston; one step-sister, Monica Hairston;one niece, Ariel Lawson of Clarkston, MI; one nephew, Jesse Lawson, Jr. of Clarkston, MI, and a host of other relatives and friends including special friends, Pamela Nelson, Lori Larkins-Madison, Kathy Brown and Shari Davis; her daughter’s special friends, Ashley Nelson and Antonio Higginbotham; and former in-laws, the Broughtons, and her Flint family, the Flippens, Harris, Horne, Young, and Moore families. Roddie Ann Broughton was preceded in death by her stepfather, Sidney Abston; grandparents, Era and Bessie Moore and Edna and Earl Lester. The family would like to express special thanks to Reverend Johnnie Bennett and St. Johns Presbyterian Church Family, the Driscoll family, and Brewer Elementary Staff.
